It all boils down to priorities and family should always come first (before houses, cars, vacations). A few posts there rightly pointed out how their priorities get skewed by trying to keep up with the Joneses.
A modest 2bed/1ba home (or a condo in Novato -- I got one I am thinking of selling ;-) ) and a used Hyundai should be adequate for anyone but we humans have a tendency to confuse needs with desires.

You give people way too much credit.
Not everybody out there is as smart, attractive, wealthy and sophisticated as everyone in the Bay Area.
